Clustered Forwards

Focus
Skills under pressure, Contested ball, Forward line delivery, Stoppages, Gameplan/Strategy.
Skills
Kicking, Handballing, Tackle, Crumb, Mark Contest.
Purpose
When forwards players spread throughout the 50m arc waiting for a forward entry, they make it easier for defenders as there is less space for them to lead into. This drill teaches forward tactics for where to stand to give themselves maximum open space.

  • Setup

Three forwards and three defenders at each end. The attackers all start in a line directly aimed at the stoppage from the goalsquare. The rest of the players (up to 16) contest the stoppage at centre wing.
  • Step 1

Start with a stoppage (either ball up or throw in) near the centre wing boundary. Players contest as per a normal game, with tackling.
  • Step 2

If a scrimmage occurs, repeat the stoppage by balling up. If a team gains possession, use handball to work the ball into a position where a player is able to kick to one of the three forwards.
  • Step 3

The forwards all have plenty of space to lead into, thanks to their starting position. The forward in front can lead directly at the player, the other forwards can lead laterally using the width of the ground.
Players must take into account the kicker's preferred foot when choosing their leading direction.
  • Step 4

Defenders attempt to spoil. If a mark is taken, go back and take a shot on goal.
  • Step 5

Note the places from which goals are kicked. These will most often be nearer the center of the ground, so players should be looking for a good lead to the fat side ahead of one towards the boundary.
Temper this with the fact the player who has the biggest break on their opponent will be most likely to mark
  • Step 6

Optionally keep score. After the shot on goal, rotate any players who sat out, reset, then start another wing stoppage. If windy, change ends after a few turns.
