Spare Cone Handball

Purpose
When a player is under pressure to dispose of the ball, they need loud calling players around them. This drill gives players an intense aerobic workout as they must work hard to be a handball option, with the tackler making multiple efforts over a short period.

  • Setup

    (A), (B) and (C) occupy 3 of the 4 cones, a designated tackler (D) starts in the middle

  • Step 1

    (A), (B) and (C) must handball the ball around the square (not diagonally)
    (A), (B) and (C) move to the spare cone to create a handball option

  • Step 2

    (D) puts pressure on all players by tackling, smothering or bumping in an attempt to cause a turnover
    If (D) effects a turnover, the player who is caught or handballs ineffectively replaces (D) in the middle
    All players should have several turns in the middle
